Hmm. I think so, but I am not sure anymore. Anyways, plain64
solves the problem. Incidentially I have kernel 2.6.34 (and
now 2.6.34.1) running on several different machines without
any problem, and it has plain64. Not that I have a disk large
enough to need it ;-)
